Churches Bombed in Malaysia for Using The Word “Allah”

As tension over the use of the word “Allah” by non-Muslims intensify, three churches in the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur have been firebombed. The High Court just decided on Friday morning, Kuala Lumpur time, that the ban on the use of the word “Allah” by non-Muslims be ended. Muslims apparently planned their protests and attacked the three churches.

The office part of one of the churches is destroyed while the two other churches suffers only minor damages. The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak, condemned the firebombings and stated that such actions would only destroy the harmony of Malaysia.

The anger by the Muslims towards the churches began when the Catholic newspaper, The Herald, was prohibited to use the word “Allah” in their publications. However, the High Court lifted the ban today on Friday and this became the source of the demonstration.

The word “Allah” is the Arabic term used by Muslims to refer to the god they are worshiping but in Malayan language, spoken in Malaysia and Indonesia, there is no other word to refer to the word “God” in general. This word has been used to refer to God in general for over 370 years. The government has been imposing the ban because they fear that the use of the word by other people of other religions would lead to confusion and even conversion of the Islamic faith.
